It has come to our attention that yet again James Browder, the Lee County Superintendent, has to make more budget cuts, meaning firing more teachers and many other repercussions that may need to follow due to these cuts.
Of course, budget cuts are normal with our country in a recession. However, these teacher cuts are drastic and are not the only thing being done. Everyone remembers hearing about the new cafeteria or gym we were supposed to have? Not happening, it doesn’t fit into the budget.
All of these cuts are being made in education, yet the state of Florida plans to spend $23 million on more road widening projects to “help the flow of traffic.” Honestly, traffic in Cape Coral is not that horrible except at 5 p.m., and even then it’s bearable.
If traffic in Cape Coral angers you that much, ride a bus, take a bike, heck, roller blade. You don’t even have to be that drastic, carpool around town. It’s not that bad.
Everyone keeps saying, “we need to help the environment, we need to help the economy,” then do it. Riding a bike is eco-friendly, and if more people started riding their bikes to their places of destination maybe the obesity rate in America would decrease. We could hit two birds with one stone.
Want to help stimulate the economy? Take public transportation, all that money goes back into the state. If everyone could just get off their butts and make a small change maybe that $23 million could go toward something useful, like who knows, education.
People keep saying that it won’t affect us that much, that we’ll be out of here soon. What people don’t realize is that these changes will affect everyone, in and out of high school.
What about people who want to be teachers? When they get a job (or if for that matter) they shouldn’t have to be worried they’re going to lose it the next year.
Not only that, but what about when the class of 2009’s children start going to school, if there even is a school to go to. Will they be getting a quality education? Who cares, they’ll have wider roads to drive on, if they’re even educated enough to get their license.
